When Oscar Wilde said "life imitates art," he probably wasn't thinking about dining chair upholstery and waterfall benches. Still so, the author's words continue to prove true as fabric creators turn to watercolor art and abstract paintings for some of today's trendiest textiles. Often, artists like Dallas" Meredith Grabham extract small pieces of their original art to create patterns that can be used for both wallpaper and fabric.
Midcentury furniture store - and the newest resident of Crockett Row at West 7th - West Elm also followed the trend with its current collaboration with the Rauschenberg Foundation - as in Robert Rauschenberg, one of the 20th century's most influential artists. The collection coincides with a retrospective of his work at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, which wraps up Sept. 17. Here, a snapshot of other textiles inspired by abstract art.
