SusieCakes, a California-based homestyle bakery, opened its doors in the University District's Westbend shopping center Saturday.
We got a special taste here at the office before the opening and I can report that the cupcakes are good. Really, really good. I've found it more-than-difficult to find a quality cupcake in town over the last few years so my taste buds were thrilled.
In a press release the company says it “specializes in an array of sentimental dessert favorites made from scratch using fresh, simple ingredients by on-site bakers.” Founder Susan Sarich says, “If you can't spell it, we don't bake with it.”
I opted for a simple chocolate on chocolate cupcake from our box of samples, but the brand is best known for its classic Vanilla Celebration Cake. Other frosted layer cakes include flavors like Southern Red Velvet, Six Layer Chocolate and Tropical Coconut. A selection of traditional cookies and bars includes snickerdoodles, fudgy brownies, seven layer bars and Susie's famous whoopie pies.
SusieCakes opened its first bakery eleven years ago in Brentwood (outside of Los Angeles). Fort Worth is the third Texas location, following Plano and Dallas opening last year.
