There's not much by way of restaurants around Texas Wesleyan University, but in less than a month, craft beer and loaded biscuits will be just across the street.
There's not much by way of restaurants around Texas Wesleyan University, but in less than a month, craft beer and loaded biscuits will be just across the street.
Chef Ben Merritt, owner of Fixture − Kitchen and Social Lounge on Magnolia Avenue, says his Ben's Triple B — that's Biscuits, Burgers and Brews — will open at the end of March.
The restaurant, located at 3016 E. Rosedale St., is part of a $6.5 million project called the Rosedale Renaissance, which aims to revitalize the Texas Wesleyan campus and its historic Poly neighborhood.
Ben's Triple B will serve buttermilk biscuits in several varieties — some with fried chicken, cheddar cheese, egg and pepper gravy, or chicken fried steak. Another option is the buffalo chicken biscuit, with blue cheese dressing, tomato and lettuce. Alternate toppings will include queso, mushroom gravy and chile con queso.
The burgers will be kept simple, Merritt says. The Plain Jane comes topped with nothing more than lettuce, onion, tomato and pickle, although it comes in a double meat option. There will also be a mushroom Swiss burger, as well as a spicy number, tentatively titled “The Texican” topped with jalapeños, chorizo grilled onions, pepper jack cheese and spicy mayo. Sides will include gravy and queso-topped French fries and tater tots, along with beer battered onion rings.
The last “B” — Beer — will include Rahr & Sons and Wild Acre Brewing on tap, along with a collection of bottles. Royal Cup coffees and teas will also be available.
The restaurant is currently hiring and while it completes construction. Merritt says he's planning a grand opening for early April.
