Pancakes, flapjacks, griddle cakes — whatever you call them, this is the day to celebrate the round, fluffy breakfast staple. On National Pancake Day, we savor five of our favorites from around town.
Yolk in Sundance Square usually serves a month-long specialty pancake. March happens to be that of a decadent key lime variety, doused with key lime sauce, grated lime peel and crumbles of graham crackers.
Billy's Oak Acres — yes, the barbecue joint — serves salad plate-sized buttermilk pancakes that come in two- ($6) or three-stack ($7) sizes. Pancake breakfasts come with your choice of bacon, ham or sausage patties. These light and fluffy beauties are served with a dollop of melting butter and a french-fry boat filled with syrup.
Swiss Pastry Shop serves something called Grandma's Bunions on Saturday only, but I hear people attempting to order them all week long. These grain and nut wonders are chock full of whole wheat, oats, flax, millet, sunflower seeds and walnuts, naturally sweetened by raisins, molasses and a hint of cinnamon. They should fill you up enough that you might be able to withstand the bakery case on your way out.
Yogi's Deli and Grill is famous for bagels but also serves up some quality pancakes. Enjoy stacks of one, two or three cakes in buttermilk, multigrain or sweet potato. The dense and hearty multigrain are a fan favorite. Top it off with granola, bananas, chocolate chips, pecans, blueberries or cranberries.
MASH'D serves an appropriately-named Manhole Cover Pancake, measuring 14 inches in diameter with blueberries and butterscotch chips folded into the batter. Then it's sprinkled with more fresh blueberries and sprouted pumpkin seeds over the top, served with a dreamy cream cheese syrup.
