Mansfield welcomed a new brewery to town Monday.
Mansfield welcomed a new brewery to town Monday.
The former gas station, in what is known as The Backyard near Mansfield's historic district, is a 4,000-square-foot space that will house both By the Horns Brewery and a taco joint called Tacos & Avocados. Both spots join other existing eateries in The Backyard — Jason Boso, who also owns Twisted Root Burger Co. (which opened there in March), welcomed Dallas' Hypnotic Emporium ice cream to the area last year.
Brewmaster Justin Meyer, who trained in Bavaria, Germany, crafted five house beers using the centuries-old German brewing style. These include:
• Helles Lager − a light Bavarian with a malty and sweet finish
• New England IPA − has a hazy and fruity appeal, with plenty of citrus and tropical notes and low bitterness
• Pale Ale − falls in the medium bitter range with piney American hops
• Hefeweizen − a cloudy, German-style wheat beer with flavors of banana and clove
• American Brown Ale − robust and on the sweeter side with caramel roasted malts
All of these beers can be sampled in a flight or by the pint. By The Horns also offers a take-home growler.
Tacos & Avocados, with one existing location already in Roanoke, will be adding a few new items to its Backyard menu in honor of By The Horns, like a Drunken Queso made with melted Mexican cheese and the house Hefeweizen, and a Beer Braised Brisket Taco. Tacos & Avocados also plans to use the breweries' spent grain to make tortillas. The restaurant will also have a full bar with its own concoctions.
