It's a boy!
The Fort Worth Zoo welcomed a baby giraffe on June 8, the zoo announced Thursday. The calf weighed 185 pounds and stood about 6 feet tall at birth, and the zoo estimates that he will reach about 18 feet and weigh up to 3,000 pounds when fully grown. The giraffe has not yet been named.
The calf is a reticulated giraffe, distinguished by its chestnut-brown rectangular markings. It will join its herd in the Fort Worth Zoo's soon-to-open African Savanna exhibit, expected to open next year. When the exhibit opens, guests will be able to feed the giraffes and see them up close, as well as view other animal species housed in the same space.
