The City of Fort Worth has named its 2017 Neighborhood of the Year.
The Sunset Heights Neighborhood Association received the honor, thanks to its new, community-painted mural. The award is given to the neighborhood that best excels in the areas of collaboration, health and wellness, physical improvements, and social aspects.
Sunset Heights is located in Rolling Hills in west Fort Worth and has a concrete retaining wall at its southern entrance near the intersection of West Vickery Boulevard and Micki Lynn Avenue. The wall used to be a popular spot for graffiti and tagging before community members decided to do something about it.
More than 50 neighbors of all ages in Sunset Heights came together for an 8-hour day of painting and community involvement. The design of a pixelated sunset with two silhouetted figures in the foreground was meant to convey the diverse community in Sunset Heights. The community followed a paint-by-numbers method as they painted 6-inch squares.
Other neighborhoods will also be recognized as part of the 2017 Mayor's Community Engagement Workshops and Neighborhood Awards. The full listing of winners will be posted on the City of Fort Worth's website at a later date.
